Fifth Sharing and Learning Seminar on “Reaching the Masses: Building Critical Public Awareness of Climate Change Adaptation”

The fifth bi-monthly Knowledge Sharing & Learning Seminar took place on 27th April 2011, revolving around the theme “Reaching the Masses: Building Critical Public Awareness of Climate Change Adaptation”. The seminar created a platform to engage donor agencies, private sector companies, media, entertainment and creative industries that can encourage mass audience awareness of climate change adaptation issues.

Roopa Rakshit, Senior Knowledge Management Officer, AIT-UNEP Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP), gave the welcome note address to all the participants. Stuart Ward, Information and Communication Officer, Sida/Swedish Environmental Secretariat for Asia (SENSA) gave the introduction of the objectives and helped set up the discussion activities. The keynote address was given by Todd Miller, Asia Media Executive, Board Member; CASBAA and Chair; CASBAA’s CSR committee, Formerly with Star TV and Asia-Pacific EVP with Sony Pictures Television, who described the gap in communication and the importance of a clear and personal message that should be provided to the public.

The seminar began with three speakers, Steve Garton, Managing Director – Media, Greater China & Global Head of Media, Synovate, who provided us with questionnaire survey results of global views on green behavior trends. He was followed by Desarack Teso, Director, Corporate Affairs, South East Asia Emerging Markets, Microsoft (Thailand) Limited, who demonstrated “Eye on Earth” and “Bend the Trend” software which addresses the environmental challenges through information technology. Somrudee Nicro, Senior Director, Thailand Environment Institute, who provided key messages on Mekong Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Dialogue on climate change adaptation.

After a brief Q&A session and refreshment break, the seminar continued with panel discussions on the responsibilities of the media, entertainment and creative industries on climate change adaptation. The four panels experienced in creating awareness described the strength and reach of the media to disseminate the message. The four panels invited were, namely, Andrew Thomas, Regional Managing Director, Southeast Asia, Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, Petri H. Lunden, Executive Chairman, Hagenburg Management and Board of the International Music Managers’ Forum, Sweden, Matt Love, Campaign Director, MTV Exit, and Craig Hobbs, CEO, The Media Alliance. There were more than one hundred participants some being business representatives working on climate change adaptation; development practitioners; international organizations; government officials; NGOs; Media and entertainment sector and community representatives.
