Objectives

-To raise awareness and build capacity for EIA practitioners in Asia to incorporate climate change adaptation in EIA processes
-As a side event to the Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum 2011, the workshop complemented the Forum in sharing knowledge and information to mainstream climate change adaptation into development in the region.
-To be a follow-on event to the Regional Workshop on “Environmental Impact Assessment in Asia: Good Practices and Capacity Needs” held in June 2010 in Manila by AECEN and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Results

The workshop brought together over 30 EIA practitioners and climate change experts from Asia and outside the region. Experts from the Netherlands, Australia, the US and the ADB served as workshop resource persons and facilitators. The workshop provided a comprehensive overview of current progress in mainstreaming climate change in EIA globally and within individual countries in Asia. Through workshop sessions and hands-on exercise, participants gained enhanced understanding on the implications of climate change in project planning; explored opportunities and constraints in using EIA to enhance climate resilience of projects; and learned from countries with more advanced practices in incorporating climate change considerations in EIA. To conclude the workshop, participants jointly deliberated on common challenges and effective ways to move forward.
