Fourth Sharing and Learning Seminar on Bridging the Gap: A Role for Business in Climate Change Adaptation
The fourth bi-monthly Knowledge Sharing & Learning Seminar of the Adaptation Knowledge Platform was organized on the theme “Bridging the Gap: A Role for Business in Climate Change Adaptation” on 14 Februrary 2011. The seminar set up a platform for a dialogue on the needs, opportunities and expectations from the role of the private sector in climate change adaptation.
Young Woo Park, Regional Director of United Nations Environment Programme – Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP-ROAP), delivered the welcome note address, while Anders Granlund, Director of SENSA, gave the opening remarks on the significance of engaging the private sector in climate change adaptation.
The seminar started with two presentations: one given by Gernot langand, Regional Technical Advisor Climate Change Adaptation of UNDP, who brought out the essence of why the private sector should play a part in climate change adaptation and the other by Richard Welford , Chairman of CSR Asia , who presented the findings of a study on harnessing the innovative capacity of the private sector for climate change adaptation.
The seminar also had panel discussion on needs, opportunities, and challenges for the role of the private sector in climate change adaptation. The six panelists, known for their work on climate change adaptation as well as corporate social responsibility, included Andreas Schild, Director General of ICIMOD, Rob Hulme , Country Head of Bayer CropScience, Vietnam, Thomas Mahl , Business Development Manager of Munich RE, Yann Brault , Sustainable Development Director of Danone Aqua and Coordinator of DanoneEcosysteme Asia Pacific , Gernot Langand and Richard Welford.
