The Lao Institute for Renewable Energy (LIRE) represented Laos at the workshop on “Engaging with Asia-Pacific on Climate Change” in Brussels on June 4. It was attended by officials from the Asia-Pacific embassies and EU as well as member state representatives, and a number of stakeholders from the Asia-Pacific such as LIRE, ASEAN Secretariat, and Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environmental Program. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss how the current EU policies in this area were proving effective, and where they needed re-shaping for 20142017. The EU has decided to move toward earmarking 20% of overseas aid for Climate Change activities. Individual EU nation states are likely to go even further, with Agence Francaise de Developpment promising to move 50% of their aid to climate change related activities.
