The Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN), Regional Climate Change Adaptation Knowledge Platform for Asia (Adaptation Knowledge Platform) and the Mongolian State University of Agriculture (MSUA) conducted a two-day workshop on sharing and management of climate change adaptation knowledge in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on 26^th and 27^th May 2011. The workshop aimed to:

1) Map out scientific and experience-based information and knowledge collected through research activities and on-ground adaption practices that would be relevant to the adaptation planning;

2) Share knowledge gaps in climate change adaptation that would pose as barriers in undertaking effective adaptation planning and implementing on-the-ground adaptation actions; and

3) Discuss about designing of a national climate change knowledge management platform in Mongolia.

More than 50 participants including provincial-level governmental officers, representatives from line ministries and research institutes attended the workshop.

The workshop started off with the opening addresses by Dr. Tumurtogtokh E, Director of School of Ecology, Technology and Development, Mongolian State University of Agriculture (MSUA), Dr. Dagvadorj D., Mongolia Special Envoy for Climate Change, Ministry of Nature, Environment and Tourism and Gankhuyag P., Director of Livestock implementation policy department, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry. The opening session was followed by presentation of Dr. Toshinao Okayama, Coordinator of the Regional Hub, Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN). Dr. Okayama introduced the activities of Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN). This was followed by Ms. Roopa Rakshit, Senior Knowledge Management Officer, AIT-UNEP Regional Recourse Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRCAP) who gave an overview of knowledge management process and the outlined objectives of the workshop. 

The first session provided a series of presentations on climate change projections in Mongolia, impacts on the agriculture sector, socio-ecological vulnerability to climate change and adaptation strategies and policies. Among the distinguished speakers were Dr. Oyuntuya Sh, MSUA, Dr. Nergui D., Research Institute of Animal Husbandry, Dr. Azzaya D., Meteorologist, Dr. Gantsetseg B., DZX Co.LLC, Dr. Turbat D., National Emergency Management Agency of Mongolia and Dr. Altanbagana.M, Department of Science for Environmental Policy of Mongolian Development Institute. The second session discussed about knowledge required  for policy-level adaption planning, knowledge gaps in carrying out adaption practices and the roles of non-scientific, experience-based knowledge in adaptation. The third session was facilitated by Ms. Rakshit’s which summarised the discussions from the previous sessions. Ms. Hiromi Inagaki, AIT-UNEP RRC.AP demonstrated the CCA Web Portal https://asiapacificadapt.net/ as one of the tools for knowledge management. This was followed by a break-out session to design a climate change knowledge management centre in Mongolia, considering the presentation and discussion points from the earlier sessions. The workshop ended with a concluding remark by Dr. Tumurtogtokh and a closing remark by Dr. Okayama, recognising the importance of establishing a knowledge management centre in Mongolia through collaboration among various stakeholders.

News regarding the workshop was broadcasted on Mongolian National Broadcasting channel and the TV 9 Channel on 26 and 27 May.
