Description of Intervention

• Small-scale forestry project to meet Kyoto Protocol requirements for combating climate change; and
• Restore 467 hectares of forest in Tengchong, where more than a dozen ethnic minority groups live.

Problems to be Addressed

The mountains of south-west China hotspot is heavily impacted by human activities, including high population growth rates, immigration from other parts of China, intensive commercial logging, large herds of grazing animals and dam construction.

Aims

Landscape Restoration

Objectives

• To establish a buffer zone between the nature reserve and the surrounding communities by restoring forests at the fringe of the reserve, and alleviate pressure of communities on the nature reserve;
• To suppress the invasive weed, Eupatorium, and prevent its expansion into the nature reserve;
• To reduce soil erosion;
• To contribute to climate change mitigation by planting trees; and
• To increase the income and alleviate poverty of local communities.

How it fits into the EbA concept

• Newly connected forest corridors (due to reforestation efforts) will help species adapt to the impacts of climate change, such as droughts and forest fires; and
• Local farmers will also increase their adaptive capacity through training to protect soils from erosion and maintain healthy watersheds, and contributing to the sustainable management of the forest ecosystems that secure their livelihoods.
