Description of Intervention

The majority of land in Char Kazul is used for agricultural purposes. The project area is highly flood prone and in the last 10-15 years sand carpeting and salinity intrusion has degraded the land more than half of the arable land. Climate change forecasts predict more frequent cyclones over a longer season, which will increase the occurrence of storm surges, riverbank erosion, salinity intrusion, abnormal high tides, rough sea weather conditions, and erratic rainfall. The project will pilot and promote adaptive agricultural practices, renovate houses and boats to make them climate resilient, and also promote afforestation/ reforestation.

Problems to be Addressed

Land degradation due to climate change impacts such as flooding, cyclones.

Aims

To enhance the capacity of local communities to adapt to future climate aggravated events of flooding, cyclones etc. by community based adaptation approaches.

Objectives

• To promote community-based adaptive capacity for communities in Char Kajal through piloting of adaptive agriculture practices;
• To renovate houses and boats to make them cyclone-resilient; and
• To conserve lands by promoting reforestation/afforestation of mangroves.

How it fits into the EbA concept

The project will result in improving the livelihood of people, and also make the area resilient to climate change impacts like floods. Along with this, measures like mangrove conservation, makes this project fit into the CCA and EBA concept.
