Provision of technical training workshops on SRI methods and a pilot activity on SRI

Problems to be Addressed

• The repetitive use of chemicals during the last two decades has rendered the soil progressively more compact and difficult to cultivate; farmers have shown an increasing interest in the use of compost and natural fertilizers.
• Farmers are exposed to higher risks of production losses with the increasing frequency and intensity of flooding in lowland areas.

How it fits into the EbA concept

SRI helps farmers produce more rice at a lower cost within a shorter period and with reduced use of seed and water, as well as chemical fertilizers that decrease soil fertility and threaten water resources. Although the results of the introduction of the SRI method to the farmers are not indicated in the available documentation, the pilot project on SRI is expected to result in the restoration of the soil fertility and easier cultivation of rice, leading to an increasing yield of rice.
