Description of Intervention
Solomon Islands was one of four countries to be endorsed for adaptation funding at the tenth meeting of the Adaptation Fund Board, held from 14-16 June 2010 in Bonn, Germany. The Solomon Islands project will focus on dealing with the impacts of climate change on agriculture and food security. The project life time is for a period of four years. The implementing entity is UNDP and the executing entity is Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM).

Aims
To strengthen the ability of communities in Solomon Islands to make informed decisions and manage likely climate change driven pressures on food production and management systems
Objectives
Some specific objectives of the project include:
• To develop vulnerability and adaptation assessment (VandA) approach and tools;
• To conduct VandA assessments;
• To assist communities and households to plan and implement adaptation activities aimed at improving and sustaining food and crop production that will be resilient to climate impacts;
• To demonstrate other proven farming techniques of soil erosion control, soil fertility enhancement, and prevention and protection of weed, pest and disease, adequately refined to factor in needs under a changing climate;
• To integrate agriculture and aquaculture production systems;
• To undertake awareness raising on promoting indigenous fruit and nut trees and their role and usefulness in enhancing resilience of farming and food production systems to climate impacts;
• To review germ-plasma collections to identify local planting materials resilient to extreme climate events; and
• To re-establish communities’ tools and planting materials to expand ‘food banks’.
