Description of Intervention
Agriculture in the primary contributor to Bangladesh’s GDP. However, having large number of wetlands and their susceptibility to a climate change impacts presents a case for modification of traditional cultivation methods. The cultivation of crops on floats (soil-less agriculture or hydroponics) presents a possible alternative to conventional cultivation approaches. The interventions under this project aim to train farmers in hydroponics techniques. The advantage of these floats is that they serve for 2-3 seasons. Post that they can be used as fertilizers.
Problems to be Addressed
Traditional agriculture under the threat of climate change
Aims
To modify traditional cultivation practices in Bangladesh by constructing floating gardens.
Objectives
Construction of floats for hydroponics
How it fits into the EbA concept
Finding an alternative to the traditional methods of cultivation can serve as an adaptation strategy for Bangladesh considering that their wetlands are susceptible to effects of climate change and sea level rise. Hydroponics or cultivation on floats is the best alternative. Additionally, it gives high yield too. The project fits into CCA concept because it will result in securing one of the main livelihood sources, i.e. agriculture.
