Description of Intervention

The coastal communities of Bangladesh rely largely on climate sensitive natural resources like fisheries and forest. In a changing climate, the vulnerability will further increase due to issues like increased frequency of disasters and sea level rise.

This project is the first global LDCF adaptation project that links together adaptation and mitigation. It draws together climate change adaptation and economic development, through coastal afforestation to address mitigation concerns and decrease the impact of climate change.

Problems to be Addressed

The project aims at planting mangroves in the coastal areas of Bangladesh as a protective measure for future sea level rise. It also aims at improving and protecting the livelihood of coastal communities who rely on climate sensitive natural resources.

Aims

To reduce the vulnerability of coastal communities to the impacts of climate change induced risks and to strengthen the institutional mechanisms to support these communities to adapt to climate change impacts.

Objectives

• Plantation of 14 km out of the 710 km long Bangladesh coastline; and
• Training local communities in plantation techniques and cash-for-work programmes.

How it fits into the EbA concept

The project resulted in plantation of mangroves along 14km of Bangladesh’s coastline. This is an adaptation response to the threat of increased sea level rise in future, hence fitting into the EbA/CCA concept.
