The largest city in Bangladesh intends to employa sustainable urban water management system, specifically requiring new buildings to installrooftop water harvesting systems, to curb the city’sworsening water shortages. Surveys performed bythe Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA)show that Dhaka requires 2.4 billion liters of watera day, but can only produce 2.1 billion, and thatgroundwater levels are receding each year by 3meters, having sunk by 50 meters in the past fourdecades. The new system will provide water fordrinking and other household activities, and aportion of it for storage in underground reservoirs.
