The need to integrate climate change adaptation into development planning is becoming increasingly urgent. However, lack of awareness or understanding of key issues around vulnerability and adaptation and the scarcity of sector- and location-specific knowledge can inhibit much needed action. In an effort to address these obstacles, START in partnership with the WMO, UNEP, IPCC, the University of Ghana, the University of Dar es Salaam, and the Bangladesh Center for Advanced Studies is engaging scientists, policy makers and others in national science-policy dialogues across West Africa, East Africa and South Asia. The purpose of the dialogues is to enable decision-makers to better integrate climate change issues in development planning and poverty reduction measures. Science-policy dialogues were recently convened in Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan.

In addition to convening national science-policy dialogues, the partners in this project are engaging city-based teams in 9 cities across West Africa, East Africa, and South Asia in an assessment of climate change risks to urban and peri-urban agriculture.
