Description of Intervention
This project is largely based on two critical questions;
1. What are the baseline adaptation activities in the food production and food security sector that Palau has already undertaken on climate change adaptation.
2. what further activities should be undertaken by the PACC project that would help Palau increase its resilience. A better knowledge of the risks involved and ways to cope with them will provide valuable insight into improving the current and future adaptive capacity of communities in Palau.
Problems to be Addressed
• Saltwater intrusion is affecting the production of traditional food crops in Palau;
• The current food production strategies of Palau may not be resilient to projected climate change impacts; and
• Current Palau Government policies are not streamlined towards climate change.
Aims
To foster sustainable agriculture and aquaculture in Palau
Objectives
• To rehabilitate taro-growing areas in Palau;
• To set up a clam-farming area to supplement income from taro production;
• To map affected taro growing areas;
• To identify, collect and evaluate salt-tolerant taro varieties;
• To propagate salt-water tolerant taro species in Ngatpang State;
• To use appropriate post-harvest technology;
• To document current practices; and
• To monitor physical parameters such as temperature, salinity and sea level rise on growth rate, bleaching and survival rates for aquaculture systems, and review current practices based on these results.
How it fits into the EbA concept
The PACC project is very closely aligned to the Palau Master Plan. A key component of the plan is environmentally sustainable development. This project complements two GEF projects that are also being implemented through UNDP in Palau, one for promoting watershed management practices, and the second for addressing the concerns related to droughts, intense rainfall and frequent storms and sea level rise.
