Description of Intervention
Bangladesh faces the problems of frequent flooding. The present project was initiated to improve the houses in Faridpur district to make them flood resistant. For this, a participatory rural appraisal (PRA) was conducted to study local building techniques and materials available in the Faridpur district to develop feasible and cost effective flood resistant housing options. Next workshops were conducted with all stakeholders and need assessment was done. Next, an affordable and durable housing model, in collaboration with local masons was constructed with the engaging carpenters and community partners. The programme has built 24 houses in 4 villages for the most vulnerable groups.

• To construct flood resistant housing;
• To undertake a participatory approach for need assessment and building design formulation; and
• To train the masons in flood resistant construction methods.
How it fits into the EbA concept
Apart from fulfilling its objective of flood resistant housing development, the project led to improvement in livelihoods since the technologies, skills and practices promoted through the project are easily manageable, affordable and adaptable. Both men and women equally participated and benefited.
