Description of Intervention

Satkhira district, the project area, is heavily dependent on rice cultivation and aquaculture. As a result of the storms and salt-water intrusion, rice production and aquaculture activities are often damaged and water sources are compromised. The project will build resilience and reduce the climatic risks associated with increased salinity by demonstrating relevant adaptive measures, approaches, and interventions to improve biodiversity and ecosystem management. It aims to target groups involved in shrimp farming, crab farming, and fisherman whose livelihoods are threatened by climate variability and salinity intrusion. Building on traditional aquaculture knowledge, four villages will be trained in sustainable aquaculture that of both fresh and salt water fish and shrimp. Additionally, mangrove forests will be rehabilitated with salinity-tolerant varieties to reduce soil erosion, improve silt deposition, and increase biodiversity.

Losses to agriculture due to storms and salt water intrusion, lack of knowledge about alternate livelihood approaches among coastal communities.

Aims

The goal of this initiative is to strengthen the resilience of coastal communities of Bangladesh under climate change regime through ecosystem and livelihoods protection.

Objectives

The main objectives of the project are:
• To demonstrate relevant adaptive measures, approaches, and interventions that will build resilience of the salinity-affected vulnerable communities in terms of biodiversity and ecosystem management; and
• To reduce climatic risks and securing their employment, food and income

How it fits into the EbA concept

The project proposes to address impacts of climate change such as salinity intrusion and resulting problems on aquaculture. And also aims at interventions that build resilience to the community who depend on aquaculture, the project fits into the CCA concept.
