In July 2015, Singapore will once again host the World Engineers Summit on Climate Change (WES), focusing on the theme ‘Sustainable Urban Development for Global Climate Resilience’. Inaugurated in 2013, WES has become a widely anticipated event providing a platform for the global community to exchange insights and share ideas for addressing the effects of climate change.

Global warming, exacerbated by rapid urbanization and industrialization, is unleashing undesirable effects across the globe. Temperatures are increasing, sea levels are rising, and unpredictable weather patterns are destroying lives and property and undermining food security. No country is immune to the impacts of climate change and increasing climate variability. There is a growing necessity to place climate resilience and sustainability at the core of the urban and industrial development agendas.

Engineers, trained in problem-solving, are well placed to lead the transition to a sustainable future by increasing knowledge of climate-related problems, developing cost-effective technological solutions, bringing this knowledge to the community-at-large and working with diverse stakeholders to bring about real progress.

To harness the collective expertise of the engineering community in building climate resilience, the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) will convene WES 2015 from 22 to 24 July 2015 at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre. Engineers from multiple disciplines, urban planning specialists, energy specialists, environment and water specialists, representatives of academia, financiers, policy makers, and business leaders from around the world will meet at WES 2015 to discuss innovative solutions and share best engineering practices enabling progress on the journey to a sustainable and resilient future.

The conference is designed for engineers and practitioners in Asia, and is organized around four tracks covering a broad range of sustainability and resilience issues in the urban context, including Clean Environment & Water Resources, Sustainable Development & Infrastructure, and Sustainable Energy. ADB is co-hosting Track 4 on Resilience and Adaptation against Climate Change. ADB will sponsor interested participants from its developing member countries (http://www.adb.org/about/members).
