Climate Action Network South Asia (CANSA), as the South Asian sub regional node for APAN, will organise the ‘Sub-Regional Conference of South Asian Parliamentarians and Policymaker’s on framing Adaptation Strategies’ on 16 -18 December, 2013 in Islamabad, Pakistan.

The three day deliberations will bring together members of the parliament, Government representatives and the civil society experts from within the region to deliberate upon the cross cutting issues that should form the core of regional climate policies. The multi-disciplinary gathering will have a forward looking agenda where the experts will link the national and local actions with regional strategy and their policy impacts pertaining to the region.

The objective of the conference is:

• To enhance the capacity of participants in understanding the latest climate science
• To Identify and bridge key gaps in the existing national/regional/international climate
• To promote partnership and improved linkages through exchange of Knowledge, Skills findings in context with threatening food, water and energy security while maintaining biodiversity and eco-system services policies necessary for Sustainable Development in South Asia and Resources for strengthening Climate actions across national boundaries within the region. ecosystem based adaptation and low carbon plans for the region
• To propose an alternative vision of sustainable development inheriting the concepts of
• To identifying priority concerns and issues for the region
• To Identifying potential topics for future trainings/ workshops on CCA

The consultation will: 

1. Build capacity of policy makers on challenges posed by changing climate through sharing of knowledge, skills and Resources across South Asia to address climate change.
2. Encourage regional partnerships with shared understanding and approaches
3. Launch ‘South Asian Parliamentarian Forum’ to lead regional agenda in near future
4. Increase trust among neighbouring decision makers and build sensitivity towards mutual concerns and perspectives while framing climate policies at various levels.
5. Move towards ‘collaborative approach’ to address climate change issues in the region.
6. Open official and un-official communication channels among policy makers to tally notes and positions before participating in international negotiations, gradually moving towards common South Asian positions.
