As countries gradually strive towards a climate resilient society, APAN and GWP SAS will conduct a 2-day workshop on “Training needs and gaps assessment on adaptation and resilience to a changing climate in South Asia” on 4-5 September 2013 in Kathmandu, Nepal, focused on assessing the gaps and needs in climate change resilience in South Asia in water. This workshop will also contribute to the need for formalized channels of information sharing centred specifically on climate change adaptation, which will be critical in building climate change resilience in South Asia.

Session Key Questions:

The following key questions will be addressed by the session:

1. Why is adaptation and resiliency important in the context of changing climate in South Asia?

2. How does water security and water cooperation play a role in CCA?

3. How does indigenous knowledge and modern technology work towards resiliency in the water sector?

4. How are water and food security interlinked?

5. What are the adaptation technologies and capacities for mountainous areas in South Asia?

Objectives

The workshop intended for nominated members of relevant ministries/ national focal points from South Asian countries aims to:

1. Equip participants with the understanding to build a climate resilient society

2. Explain the relevance of water and food security and water cooperation in the CCA planning process

3. Enhance participants’ skills in developing key indicators and setting up of measurement schemes for CCA initiatives

4. Facilitate knowledge sharing among South Asia Countries on how CCA initiatives can be implemented and the success stories replicated

5. Promote networking between and among national representatives working on CCA within the region in water sector.

Expected Outputs

The expected outputs of this session are as follows:

1. Assess the gaps and needs to improve the absorption capacity in national planning systems

2. Increase level of awareness on the relevance of water security and IWRM for CCA initiatives

3. Build familiarity with various success stories and progress on water security from the region and how these can be further replicated or used

4. Improve knowledge sharing and increase networking between the participants following the workshop

5. Improve understanding of coherent policies and strategies of cross-cutting concerns that CCA initiatives intend to address.

The participants will be expected to consistently update and share their accomplishments with others from the region and APAN. The nominated representatives from the Country Water Partnerships as well as from Maldives and Afghanistan will be expected to provide necessary inputs to the chapter contribution by GWP SAS in the overall Synthesis Report by APAN Regional Hub (RH). The progress of each country will be closely monitored by GWP SAS and APAN.
