Such natural disasters as floods, mudflows, landslides, wild fires in Central Asia has intensified and increased in frequency in recent years. Moreover CAREC research shows that climate risk management and disaster risk reduction lack integration into countries national and regional adaptation strategies and plans. Therefore, CAREC as a Central Asian regional hub for Asia Pacific Adaptation Network has organized the regional training-workshop “Adaptation to Climate Change through Climate Risk Reduction, Disaster Preparedness and Response in Central Asia” on 29-30 of July 2013 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

The purpose of the training was to build capacity and reiterate the importance of the adaptation to climate change for the relevant agencies responsible for disaster preparedness and response in Central Asia. Training has united 20 experts representing national agencies responsible for emergency preparedness and response, climate forecasts, water management and healthcare from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.

During the first part of the training speakers from international organizations (WHO, UNDP, GIZ, GEF-SGP, Save the Children, Focus Humanitarian Assistance) made presentations and shared their experience and methodology in CRM and DRR in Central Asia. The second part was dedicated to practical work where participants had to assess the disaster risks pertinent to particular areas in their respective countries and develop and present the outlines for the Climate Risk Management plans.

The evaluation report shows that the training was highly appreciated by the participants who got a lot of new knowledge on the areas of natural and human systems in Central Asia that are the most vulnerable to climate change, the links between disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation and the tools to assess, reduce and manage climate risks. The training was cofinanced by GIZ and revealed a lot of opportunities for further cooperation between CAREC and GIZ in terms of capacity building activities on CRM and DRR for relevant stakeholders.
