As a follow-up to the recently conducted Vulnerability and Adaptive Capacity Assessment (VACA) survey, the SeaGate Institute of Technology held a training workshop from June 6 to 8 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The workshop focused on the statistical software package STATA-12 for experts from the Himalayan Climate Change Adaptation Programme (HICAP), a pioneering collaboration among three organizations–Center for International Climate and Environmental Research (CICERO), International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), and UNEP GRID-Arendal. The training, which covered STATA basics, data management, descriptive statistics, and inferential statistics, has prepared members from different HICAP components (including vulnerability and adaptation; water availability and demand scenarios; food security; and women in adaptation) to analyze raw data collected during the VACA survey, which was undertaken in four river sub-basins in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region – the upper Brahmaputra, the mid-Brahmaputra, the Koshi, and the upper Indus. Analyses using the STATA software will help draw conclusions about the vulnerability and adaptive capacity of mountain people in the HKH region, including the assessment of issues like water security, food security, and how climatic and socioeconomic change affect women differentially. It will also help in the construction of a Mountain Livelihood Vulnerability Index
