ISAP2012, organized by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) under the umbrella theme of “Steering toward a sustainable and resilient future”, was convened focusing on four timely issues: follow-up to Rio+20, climate change, resilient society, and green economy. ISAP2012 also served as a platform to introduce new publications, including the fifth Global Environmental Outlook (UNEP/GEO5); Global Outlook on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) Policies; and the fourth IGES White Paper titled “Greening Governance in Asia-Pacific”. ISAP2012 featured a plenary session for each of four themes followed by breakout sessions where participants got the opportunity to engage with speakers. Parallel Sessions included versatile themes such as the ‘Resilient Energy System towards Green Economy’ and the ‘Urban City Challenges in Asia’. For example, based on a field survey in Fukushima and using their experience of post-Chernobyl Europe, a group of experts from Japan and Europe debated on effective decontamination
