Though Climate Change affects everyone, there are gender and sociopolitical and economic differences in impacts and adaptive capacities. For example, women from poor communities are highly dependent on local natural resource and often disproportionately vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

How to Address the Needs of Women: Regional Launch of the USAID Online Sourcebook for Integrating Gender in Climate Change Adaptation Projects

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Regional Development Mission for Asia is launching an online sourcebook to help ensure that gender considerations and women’s empowerment are incorporated into large-scale climate change adaptation projects. Using the sourcebook can significantly help improve the status of women living in Asia and the Pacific.

The impacts of climate change – drought, floods, extreme weather, and reduced food and water security – severely affect the most vulnerable groups, particularly women who are often dependent on the natural resources threatened by environmental change. But while women are disproportionately impacted, they have a unique and essential contribution to make in adapting to a changing climate, as many women manage water, food and fuel for their families.

The online sourcebook enables project proponents to design gender-responsive climate change adaptation measures as well as projects, particularly in developing countries, by providing targeted, sector-specific guidance and real-life examples that are easy to follow and navigate on laptops and mobile devices.

This regional launch is jointly organized by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, and is part of its Evening Café series.

This web chat is organized in the context of ADB's regional technical assistance program 'Harnessing Climate Change Mitigation Initiatives to Benefit Women' in Viet Nam, Cambodia and Lao PDR which aims to mainstream gender into mitigation policies, develop national and local actors' capacity to access finance and develop inclusive mitigation action, and supports the implementation of 3 gender-responsive pilot projects in the region.

Yet new research funded by the Asian Development Bank shows women are rarely considered in the disbursal of multi-million dollar global climate funds. In a changing climate finance landscape, how can we help women gain better access to finance and national institutions deliver it in a more effective, efficient and inclusive way?
