Climate Change for Forest Policy-Makers: An Approach for Integrating Climate Change into National Forest Programmes in Support of Sustainable Forest Management

The critical role of forests inclimate changemitigation andadaptation is nowwidely recognized.Actions to supportthis role are takenat different levelsfrom internationalto local. However,in many countriesclimate changeissues havenot been fullyaddressed innational forestpolicies, norhave the forestry mitigation and adaptation needsbeen thoroughly considered in national climatechange strategies. Also cross-sectoral dimensionsof climate change impacts and response measureshave not been fully appreciated. The FAO ForestryDepartment and the NFP Facility are working tosupport countries on integration of climate changeinto their national forest programs. The publicationis a key part of this support and seeks to providea practical approach to the process of integrating climate change into national forest programs.The aim is to assist senior officials in governmentadministrations and stakeholders, including civilsociety organizations and the private sector, inpreparing the forest sector for the challenges andopportunities posed by climate change.
