Road Rehabilitation Project (Loan-2718)

The project will rehabilitate 27.5 km of main road and 6 km of feeder and access roads on the South Tarawa atoll which joins the airport with the seaport of Betio through the administrative capital of Bairiki and runs the length of a narrow and densely populated area along which more than 40% of Kiribati’s people reside. By improving the poor condition of this most important road, the project will make the national transportation system more efficient and add to the quality of life. The drainage design will take into account the possible risk posed by heavier rainfall in future years. Because some future climate scenarios also forecast longer and more intense droughts, the project will consider directing runoff to soak pits to increase groundwater. Phases 2 and 3 of the World Bank-financed Kiribati Adaptation Project is undertaking coastal protection work to combat the threat of sea level rise and increased erosion.
