The workshop was part of an initial regional round of consultations to establish a framework on global sustainability. It was established by The Science and Technology Alliance for Global Sustainability, which consists of a number of organisations, including International Council for Science, International Social Science Council, Belmont Forum, UN Educational Scientific Cultural Organisation, UNEP, and UN University, with World Meteorological Organisation as an observer.

The workshop was held over three days with a number of interactive sessions to discuss, challenge, regionalise and specify the initial design options of the global research framework for Future Earth, and the governance structure that an international transition team of experts has been working on. The workshop was a congregation of scientists, development actors, educators, capacity builders, funders and individuals working at the boundary between science and policy.
