  • Legal system of prevention and restoration

TECHNOLOGIES MATURITY:

Applicable immediately

Technology Owners:

Government, users, other involved stakeholders

Needs Address

Conservation of resources

Adaptation effects

  • Enables sustainable fisheries management in the context of depleting resources being competed for by users
  • Sustained fish stocks contribute to food security and economic stability

Overview and Features

The toolbox provide guidance to fisheries policy makers as to when to implement policy changes or develop new policies or approaches to adapt to climate change impacts. Key elements of the toolbox include- general objectives of the fisheries management system; management measures (input controls, output controls and technical measures); and institutional arrangements, support structures for scale of management and user participation.

Cost

Human resource and administrative costs

Energy source

Human resources

Ease of maintenance

Require continuous maintenance and review of procedure, relations and tools employed

Technology performance

  • Is an effective way to maintain and restore fish and aquaculture stock
  • The toolkit can help in defining conservative, risk-averse decision making in the face of potential negative implications of climate change (OECD, 2011)
  • The fisheries management toolbox can be used to improve carbon-based fuel  efficiency for the sector as a whole by using management measures to reduce overcapacity and excess effort thereby improving fuel efficiency by promoting specific gears (OECD, 2011)

Considerations

Fishery Management Toolbox’s has to be updated to address the changing climatic conditions

Co-benefit, suitability for developing countries

  • Ecosystem conservation
  •  “Co-management” at the local level that achieves participatory community action may be the most sustainable and feasible option in many developing country context
