Description of Intervention

• Provide community members with training courses for their building capacity on forest management; and
• Raise awareness on the importance of natural resources and its relationship with ecotourism.

Problems to be Addressed

Most (94%) of the Chambok community illegally log trees, hunt wildlife and burn wood for charcoal, consequently affecting not only biodiversity and natural resources, but also forest products that the people’s livelihoods are dependent on (partially as a result of marginalization due to mining activities in the area). Many (66%) of the people do not have other sources of income. Besides the decrease in forest productivity, the prolonged dry season made it difficult to grow crops.

Aims

To manage natural resources sustainably and improve the livelihood of people

Objectives

• Natural resource conservation; and
• Income generation from various activities related to ecotourism.

How it fits into the EbA concept

The project restores, protects and sustains the forest ecosystems in the Chambok community. As a result, services that villagers gain from the forest, including ecotourism, have diversified their income streams, thereby also increasing their financial resilience to droughts.
